Approximately fourteen years ago, a small group of surgeons came together to form The Surgical Society of Zambia. Being teachers and leaders in the field of surgery in Zambia, they recognised the unmet need for surgical care in the country and the challenges that lay ahead. In Zambia, surgically treatable diseases are not as important as the great killers of our people- Malaria, Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and Malnutrition. Like surveys in many countries in sub-Saharan Africa have shown, a significant number of people die from injuries sustained in falls, accidents and violence. There are a significant number of deaths resulting from conditions that would be amenable to surgery. It was evident that this unmet need meant that there were many unnecessary deaths from cerebral injuries, strangulated hernias and obstetric disasters

During its formative years, these foundation members of the society laid down the objectives and functions of the society. The objectives of the Society are to promote, foster and assist the advancement of:
1.The art and science of surgery in Zambia.
2.Surgical services and the standard of surgical care in Zambia.
3.The formation of a body able to represent the views and interests of those working in surgery and related disciplines.
4.The teaching of Surgery.

5.Research in the field of surgery.

6.Communication of surgical knowledge
7.Fellowship between members, associate members and all professional colleagues.
8.Affiliations with such bodies as the Association of Surgeons of East Africa and other surgical associations elsewhere in the world.
Over the past years the society has diligently endeavoured to achieve its objectives through numerous activities such as holding regular scientific meetings, scientific exhibitions, educational lectures and the circulation of the society newsletter (recently renamed “The Blade”). In the era of the worldwide web, it was natural that the society venture into this brave new world and set up a website. This exciting phase in the society’s growth holds endless possibilities for addressing its objectives. It is a site that will espouse the views and interests of those working in surgery and related disciplines in Zambia. As a widely available media of communication it will provide teaching material and be a source of surgical knowledge, highlight surgical research being performed in Zambia and be a forum for fellowship between members, associate members and all professional colleagues.
My vision for this website is that our membership takes full advantage of its endless possibilities and help evolve it into a tool for developing the surgical services in Zambia. There is an opportunity for the society to fulfil its goal for a Journal of the Society online. With this site we now have the tool reach our members based both locally and internationally. I am thankful for the efforts and advice of members involved in setting up this site
I accepted the nomination to serve as chairman and work with a committee of dedicated surgeons devoted to the achieving the objectives of the society. The success of this new venture will be judged by the benefits the members draw from it. We hope it will become a valuable source of information for their practice of surgery in Zambia.
